Racq welcomes new speed cameras on deadliest road in Canada

The federal government is sending a letter to all municipalities to ensure they have the equipment needed to enforce speed cameras that have been installed as part of new provincial highway safety legislation, following a spike in deaths on that stretch of Highway 17.

"As municipalities are becoming aware of the impact of distracted driving and impaired driving, we have undertaken work in consultation with these communities to provide additional and more rigorous data analysis and recommendations to enhance the capacity of police, firefighters, and emergency medical service personnel," said the letter.

The letter was sent to all RCMP detachments as well as to city, town and school board members and said municipalities will be required to submit any proposed changes to speed cameras or increase to $20,000 the money the cameras already receive for every ticket, regardless of the person, and to include reports about accidents that caused that ticket.

In 2015, eight deaths and two injuries were recorded on the stretch of highway where the speed cameras operate.

The federal letter says that the information collected by the speed cameras can help improve the safety of road users and police forces are also provided with information on possible injuries or death related to impaired drivers.

The federal government says speed cameras have been operating on Saskatchewan roads since the mid-1970s, but there hasn't been a reported incident of anyone killed or seriously injured since 1996.

"The first thing you need to do is open up your email and look at the emails we're receiving from people," said Bill Healy, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Energy's Center for Energy and the Environment.

Hancock's bill would require gas-fired power plants in Del Norte County to be constructed with more energy-efficient equipment in order to reduce energy consumption. It also would require gas-fired plants in Orange, Fresno, Lake and Santa Ana Counties to have the same amount of energy capacity, or more, to save on energy costs.

"We are seeing more and more utilities moving to gas, so if we can make it more competitive, then it's going to pay for itself because customers are going to be using less," Hancock said.

A similar bill has passed in New Jersey, which would require residents to pay at least $16 per month to utilities when buying gas from other states.

While state lawmakers are still in the midst of debating the bill, several other states and cities have made similar efforts to encourage improvements in their energy sector.

In South Carolina, Mayor Nikki Haley has asked the state's Public Service Commission to develop a list of energy targets that will be more affordable for the state's residents. She recently announced plans to build a $8 million wind turbine farm, which will be "the largest wind farm in the United States."

Some cities and counties in Colorado are also making efforts, and are encouraging residents to look at other energy sources like solar or other clean energy sources.

Colorado's legislature passed a bill in February, sponsored by Rep. Ed Reitz and Sen. Pat Roberts, that will allow people to save up to an additional $2,000 on their electricity bills this summer if they switch providers within 15 days.

According to the state's energy task force, an estimated 21 percent of the costs for energy infrastructure could be avoided in the U.S. if no new utilities were built or replaced.
